Cut
Diamonds are cut to specific dimensions which are designed to reflect the most light. The more light coming back to you the more "sparkly" or as jewelers put it, brilliant the diamond will be. If cut poorly, the diamond will loose light and be less brilliant.
Carat
A diamond's weight is measured in carats. One carat is equal to one fifth of a gram. While that doesn't sound like much, the heavier the diamond, the more valuable it is; all other qualities being equal that is. Choose a size that feels right to you.
Clarity
Most diamonds have inclusions. These inclusions are naturally formed within the diamond as they are created in the earth. Clarity is determined by how many and how visible these "birth marks" are to the naked eye or using a 10X loupe.
Color
Diamond hues range from completely colorless to grey or yellow. They are graded on a scale. "D" color is at the top and is completely colorless. Most diamonds sold are in the "G to H" range, as those have the least amount of color for the most affordable price.
